  1. I have read the first 2 chapters and am getting hooked. It raises the hair on my neck to read that Joan's mother was trapped in such a horrible marriage. It seems she was captured, considered a heathen and enslaved to her priest husband. Then when poor Joan is born her father doesn't even disguise his disappointment that she is a girl and has no value. I like that Joan is bucking this culture at even the age of four. I have a feeling I will love to read about Joan's spirited fight for her place as a valued member of society. I am afraid her mother will come to some horrible end. I'll read on......
